The Night I Heard the Word "Church"

Sometimes God gives you the word before He gives you the meaning. This one came three times in a single night, made no sense in the morning, and was standing at my door by the next afternoon.

1. The Word in the Night

Years ago, I was renting a house in Redding, California. I had graduated from Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry in 2007, and even though I had moved on into my working career, I still wanted to stay connected to the culture of what God was doing there. So my idea was simple: fill the house with Bethel students. I posted an ad on a Bethel website for a room for rent.

That same night, while I was sleeping, I kept hearing one word over and over. Church. Church. Church. It was so strong and so repetitive that when I woke up, I could not shake it. I went into prayer and said, "Lord, what is the deal with the church?"

I did not get an answer. At least not right then.

He gave me the word before He gave me the meaning.

2. The Phone Call

Later that same day, in the late afternoon, my phone rang. A guy on the other end sounded urgent. He said, "Hey, I need a place to stay. I'm showing up there tomorrow, and I don't have anything lined up."

I told him about the room. Honestly, I needed a renter, so I convinced him to come check it out. We made an appointment. Then, right at the end of the call, I asked him one simple question: "What's your name?"

He said, "My name is Ben Church."

The moment I heard that, something hit my spirit. The word from the night before suddenly made sense. Church. Church. Church. I knew God had highlighted him before I ever met him.

So I told Ben something along the lines of: "Stop what you're doing. Don't look anywhere else. This is the place you're supposed to live. Trust me. Come here and check it out." And he did.

He knew the name before the phone rang.

3. The Ripple

Ben became a very influential person in my life. I hope he reads this someday, because we often have no idea what kind of ripple effect one relationship can create.

Later, Ben's sister moved to Redding to attend the same school. She eventually met the man who would become her husband. One connection led to another. One room for rent became part of a much bigger story.

And it all started with God whispering one word in the night: Church.

One room for rent became part of a much bigger story.

The Encouragement

Sometimes God speaks before we understand what He is saying. Sometimes the answer does not come in the prayer room. Sometimes it comes through a phone call later that day.

Sometimes obedience looks ordinary: posting an ad, answering a call, renting a room, making space for someone. But heaven may be moving through something that looks small.

We do not always know the ripple effect of saying yes. A place to stay can become a divine appointment. A conversation can become a covenant friendship. A small act of hospitality can become part of someone's destiny.

God is not random with timing. He knows the name before the phone rings. He knows the person before they arrive. He knows the story before we understand the word He gave us.

And sometimes, the word you heard in the night becomes the person standing at your door the next day.
