One Person Believed in Them

Helen Keller was six years old — deaf, blind, and locked inside her own silence — when a twenty-year-old teacher named Anne Sullivan arrived at her Alabama home. Nearly everyone else had concluded the child was unreachable. Anne hadn't. She spelled words into Helen's palm for weeks with no sign of understanding, until the morning at the water pump when the word "w-a-t-e-r" and the water itself suddenly connected — and a mind everyone had written off came pouring out.

Helen Keller went on to become an author and speaker known around the world. She never stopped crediting the one person who kept spelling into the dark when there was no evidence anyone was listening.

From our founder's own life: a pilot thirteen years out of the cockpit, certain his flying days were over, until a friend's wife prayed for him, looked him in the eye, and said, "You're gonna fly again." He walked into a jet center the next day and was hired on the spot.

She lent him belief the way you'd lend a neighbor a ladder — and he climbed out of six discouraged years on it. (The full story is on our Starting Over page.)

An eighteen-year-old showed up at a hotel because the seminar he'd saved for was canceled. An assistant to the young speaker didn't shoo him away — she took his name and number, got him into the next event, and covered his room.
