Hearing His Voice

Scripture - the anchor.

Every other way of hearing is measured against His written Word. He will never say something that contradicts it.

The inner witness

- a thought, an impression, a knowing, a conviction that rises quietly inside rather than arriving as an audible voice. 1 Kings 19:12 (WEB) calls it “a still small voice.”

Peace - and the loss of it.

Not “I feel good, so God said it,” but a settledness that accompanies His direction, and an unrest that often accompanies a wrong turn.

Pictures and visions

- a mental image, a scene, a symbol that carries meaning you did not manufacture.

Dreams

- Acts 2:17 (WEB): “Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.”

Prophetic words

- encouragement, strengthening, and comfort spoken by another person that lands with weight you both recognize.

Other believers

- counsel, teaching, or someone independently saying the very thing you had already sensed.

Circumstances and timing

- doors opening and closing, unusual timing, repeated themes. Interpret circumstances through His character, not the other way around: not everything that happens is His voice.

Creation and ordinary life

- a sunrise, an object, a stranger's sentence, something mundane suddenly becoming a window.

Worship and prayer

- direction that becomes clear not by striving but while your attention is fixed on Him.

Desires and sanctified imagination

- dreaming with God. As you walk closely with Him, He speaks through the desires and creativity He planted in you.

Physical sensations

- some people notice warmth, tears, or a holy heaviness in prayer. A sensation is an invitation to pay attention - not, by itself, a message.

Testimony and remembrance

- remembering what He has done before. Retelling His works tunes your ear for what He may do again.

Repetition and confirmation

- the same theme arriving independently through Scripture, a conversation, a song, a circumstance. Repetition gets your attention. It does not, by itself, settle the interpretation - that still gets tested.

Does it agree with Scripture?

He never contradicts His own Word.

Does it sound like Jesus?

The clearest picture of the Father's heart is the Son. If the voice condemns, shames, or drives you with fear, it is not the Shepherd - His correction draws you closer; it never crushes you.

What do wise, grounded believers say?

Bring what you sense into the light with people who love God and love you enough to be honest.

What fruit does it bear?

His voice produces love, peace, humility, and courage. Fear, pride, confusion, and isolation are a different voice.

Begin with presence, not requests.

Five minutes of simply being with Him before you ask for anything. Awareness of a Person comes before answers to a prayer.

Read a Gospel slowly.

When one line seems to lift off the page, stop. Carry that line through the whole day.

Keep a journal.

Write down impressions, pictures, and dreams with dates. Review it monthly - His patterns emerge over time.

Practice the pause.

Before decisions, ask “What are You saying here?” - and actually wait.

Ask for interpretation, not just revelation.

“What does this mean?” is a prayer He loves to answer.

Practice in small things.

Learn His voice in low-stakes moments so you can trust it in high-stakes ones.

Share what you sense with a grounded believer, and invite honest feedback.

Humility is the fastest classroom.

Learn your peace.

Notice the difference between His settledness and your own adrenaline. They feel different - learn the difference.

Remember out loud.

Retell what He has done - to your family, your journal, your own soul. Testimony tunes the ear.

When you miss it, don't quit.

A child learning a language gets the grammar wrong a hundred times, and the father is not ashamed - he is delighted his child is talking to him.
